We are reporting a retrospective review of the removal of 60 intramedullary rods in 58 patients. All fractures had healed at the time of rod extraction. The implant was removed from 34 asymptomatic patients (36 femurs). Twenty-four patients (24 femurs) had preoperative symptoms attributed to the femoral rod. Fourteen patients had symptoms about the greater trochanter preoperatively, five patients had symptoms referable to the knee, and five had infections about the femoral implant.

The successful surgery, performed by Dr. Steven Sanders, the UFC's Orthopedic Surgeon, inserted an intramedullary rod into Anderson's left tibia. The broken

Tibial shaft fracture repaired by driving a titanium rod (nail) down the intramedullary canal and across the fracture site. The rod placement is then secured Intramedullary nailing of the humerus, while used less frequently than plate osteosynthesis, has several mechanical and biologic advantages. Mechanically, intramedullary nails are strong implants, which can effectively share load. They are inserted using “minimally invasive” closed techniques. The other patient required rod removal and currently has a nonunion, uses a brace, and is on suppressive antibiotic treatment.

The surgeon may also put a plate next to your bone that is attached by screws. Sometimes, fixation devices are attached to a frame outside your leg. Introduction. Ankle arthrodesis is performed in a variety of methods. We propose a new technique for tibiotalar arthrodesis using a newly designed intramedullary nail. Methods. We proposed development of an intramedullary device for ankle arthrodesis which spared the subtalar joint using a sinus tarsi approach. Standard saw bones models and computer assisted modeling and stress There are several theoretic advantages of using intramedullary rod fixation for tibial osteotomy fixation.

the rod was advanced in the distal femoral metaphysis. When optimal alignment had been obtained, the distal 2 locking screws were inserted. An attempt was made to further impact the rod to obtain a little distraction. About 0.5-cm distraction seemed to be obtained. The proximal locking screw was then placed.

intramedullary device.4 The device consisted of an ivory intramedullary nail that contained holes at the end, through which ivory interlocking pins could be passed. Around the same time period, Nicolaysen of Norway described the biomechanical principles of intramedullary devices in the treatment of proximal femur fractures.5 Nicolaysen proposed Intramedullary Rod Many times, a person who has suffered a severe broken bone injury as the result of a traumatic event, such as a car, truck, mass transit, bus, train, SEPTA, or other automobile accident, dog bite, or slip and fall, will undergo an Orthopaedic surgery during which an Intramedullary Rod is placed into or against the injured bone.

After a fracture, an intramedullary rod may be used to realign and stabilize the femur bone to promote healing. Also known as intramedullary nailing, this is a common treatment for a femur shaft fracture and involves reconnecting the two ends of the bone and holding them in place with a metal rod. 2021-04-02 · In the most common surgery to repair a femur fracture, the surgeon inserts a rod or large nail into the center of the bone. This rod helps support the bone until it heals. The surgeon may also put a plate next to your bone that is attached by screws.

Each end is castellated to provide alternate sharp cutting surfaces and angled face guide projections to facilitate emplacement in the medullary canal.

The oblique, step cut, and transverse osteotomies each were used, but ultimately they favored the transverse procedure because it was simpler, led to better control of angulation, and showed no difference in healing time from the other two patterns.

The surgeon drills a tunnel up through this bone, through the talus and into the tibia. The rod is placed through this tunnel, locking these bones together. The rod is secured with a series of screws placed through additional tunnels.
